[#facilitation] Some misconceptions about facilitation:
1 - The hero is the facilitator
2 - It’s a “loud” skill for extroverts
3 - The most important thing is the delivery
In fact,
1 - In really fantastic sessions, the facilitator isn’t the hero - the participants are. The more the facilitator makes the session about them, and for them, the more successful the session.
2 - While it is a skill that often involves lots of explaining, talking, seemingly extroverted traits and “hubbub”, there is so much quiet, deep thinking, introspective and reflective time that is a prerequisite for delivering an effective session.
3 - Delivery seems like the main thing, but the planning and design of the sessions is profoundly important and requires almost as much energy as delivery in some cases. From content to creating the activities, to thinking through the flow of energy and attention from section to section, to understanding the audience... these are just some of the things that require concerted focus to get right.
This week, I’ve spent time in the second and third ones mentioned above: in deep thinking mode, iterating and preparing for the upcoming orientation programme for Stirling Schools - eight sessions I’m excited to be delivering next week. In this particular programme, we will be orienting all the teachers at Stirling schools across Iraq who will be using Cambridge University Press Education #resources in the coming year.
A completely virtual programme, this one has been a lot of fun to plan for - my third year now delivering this programme in close coordination with Sercan Oz: thank you for all the work you do to make organising huge virtual programmes like this so easy for us at #Cambridge. I am really looking forward to welcoming your teaching teams on these sessions next week.
P.S. Stirling Schools are one of many in the #MENA region who use a mixture of Education and English resources, so my super colleague Peter Lucantoni with the English team will be delivering concurrent sessions next week too!🕺🏽🙌✨
